Artist retreat Tasmania — private creative retreat with D'Entrecasteaux Channel views and natural light

An Artist Retreat in Southern Tasmania — Unforgettable

There is something about Southern Tasmania that changes the way you work. The quality of the light. The scale of the silence. The sense that you've arrived somewhere that doesn't move at the pace of the mainland.

Why Artists Choose Southern Tasmania

Tasmania has long drawn artists for reasons that are difficult to fully articulate but instantly recognisable when you're here. The light is different — softer, more horizontal, especially in autumn and winter. The landscape at the D'Entrecasteaux Channel holds a particular quality: wide water, hobby farms, distant island. It is the kind of view that asks something of you.

Southern Tasmania also offers relative isolation. You are far enough from Hobart that the city doesn't reach you — approximately 35–40 minutes south — but close enough that you can access it when you need supplies, company, or a night out.

Past Creative Guests

The Cottage at Flowerpot has become a quiet favourite among artists, musicians, and visual creatives. Guests return for the light, the silence, and the particular quality of focus that the property seems to make possible. It is the kind of place that stays with you — and that you find yourself recommending to others who do similar work.

Space to Work, Space to Think

Whether you're working on a body of paintings, recording a new album, editing a manuscript, or simply trying to think more clearly than you can in the city — The Cottage provides the conditions that creative work requires: uninterrupted time, physical comfort, and distance from the ordinary.

The two living areas are large enough to use one as a dedicated working space. The kitchen is fully equipped for long stays. And when you need to step away from the work, the deck, the sauna, and the surrounding farm are all there.

The Setting — Landscape as Creative Fuel

The Cottage at Flowerpot sits on a hobby farm looking east across the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. On clear days, Bruny Island is visible from the deck. The farm includes lavender gardens, native wildlife, and the kind of unhurried pace that becomes the background to your working day.

Ten minutes away, the Kettering ferry crosses to Bruny Island — itself a destination with a long association with artists, solitude, and the restorative power of coastal wilderness.

Mewstone Winery is minutes from the property. Worth knowing.
